With this project, the Swedish Sport Fishing and Fisheries Conservation Association aims to improve ecosystem health and biodiversity in Varbosån with a catchment area. A new passage past Petarve Water Saw will improve the situation for, among others, spawning sea trout.
About the project
The project will create a free migration route for aquatic organisms past Petarve water saw in Sanda and enable new spawning and nursery environments, and contribute to improved ecosystem health and biodiversity in Varbosån.
The dam at the saw currently constitutes a definitive barrier, among other things for threatened species such as the sea trout and river lamprey, which are entirely dependent on these environments for reproduction.
By restoring a fauna passage past the dam, areas upstream of the saw can once again be made accessible.
Since the water saw is a cultural heritage, the project also aims to inspire the possibility of combining the preservation of cultural heritage and the implementation of measures that benefit animals and nature – a must if we are to preserve biological diversity and counteract climate change in the future, says the project owner.

The Swedish Board of Agriculture granted the application for project support on 2026-07-08.
The purpose of the project:
To protect and contribute to improved ecosystem health and biodiversity in Varbosån and its catchment area.
The project's goals are to:
Establish a fauna passage past Petarve water saw in Sanda.
Improve and restore areas for spawning sea trout and other aquatic organisms.
Evaluate how well the fauna passage works and whether fish have used the stretch upstream of the saw for spawning.
Conduct educational sessions with the local population on issues related to biodiversity and the conservation of our ecosystems.
