Virtual fences for lambs
– Virtual fences can make lamb production more profitable, sustainable, and competitive. Overgrown and hard-to-access areas can be grazed, thereby increasing biodiversity, says Per Peetz Nielsen, senior researcher at RISE.
The lambs receive collars with a transmitter that is charged via solar cells. With an app on a mobile phone or computer, the virtual fence is created that sets the boundaries for where the animals can move. Near a boundary, they first receive three sound warnings. If they do not back away, they eventually receive a mild electric shock.

Project name: ”Increased grazing management in Gotland with virtual fences for sheep”
Project owner: RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden AB)
Purpose: to test virtual fence technology on a smaller group of sheep at a lamb producer in Gotland to study how the animals react to and understand the technology.
CASE: to conduct a pilot study to gain knowledge about how virtual fence technology for sheep works and to develop a basis for a more comprehensive study with the aim of accelerating the process of getting the technology approved for sheep in Sweden.
